Screengrab from the launch video of Veo 3 and new features

Writing this fresh from watching Veo’s launch event for the new Veo 3 camera, which included some exciting updates to the Video Editor and Analytics Studio.

All in all, this makes a great product better. The camera hardware improvements are pretty awesome — and thankfully many of the new improvements to the editor and analytics don’t depend on the new camera.

As ever, Veo always talk an exceptional game — and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a great promo video. The rubber, as ever, will meet the road, when we all actually start using those features — so we shall see…

The key improvement on the Editor and Analytics is the addition of an events feature alongside shirt number recognition and team layouts, which should hopefully, finally, lead to a situation where, as an analyst I can easily compare clips for players or situations across a range of matches, and work with players on these. That’s near enough impossible just now without your own solution.

Streaming can now be made to platforms like Twitch, YouTube — even your own platform. This is a pretty big (and welcome) shift — but breaking free of their walled garden may explain why that feature is going to cost...

Finally, I kept an eye on comments in the live chat. Overall, the feedback on the new Veo features and camera seemed somewhat mixed. Some people were excited about the new features, such as player tracking and live streaming, while others are disappointed with the pricing or lack of features for their sport — quite a lot of questions were pinged about support for lacrosse, rugby and basketball. Some people cited negative experiences with customer support when others suggested using customer support for queries. I get that, as I’ve had a couple of frustrations myself.

Here are some specific examples of feedback from the chat:

Positive:

“This is cool! But I’ve been doing it for a year with a system I built myself.”

“This is awesome, half time team talk would be much more expressive.”

“We think Veo is worth the cost.”

Negative:

“€30 a month for live streaming.. WTF!!!”

“… is over 3k a year”

“I only hope that they invest more money and time on Quality Control and Customer Service…”
